On Saturday 8th November the Under 8 girl’s hockey team boarded the school mini bus at 8.30am to go to Beaudesert Park School. There was great excitement amongst the girls as this was to be their first experience of travelling away to a fixture and their first ever hockey festival! They were not to be disappointed, the sun shone, refreshments were provided and lots of hockey was played; the morning was a great success. Teams at the festival included Beaudesert Park School, The Downs, Wycliffe, Dean Close, St Hughes and Butcombe Clifton College. The girls had to play four different teams and to everyone’s delight, they won all four!!! Congratulations to all that played and a big thank you to all those parents who came to watch and support.

Tag Rugby v The Downs

Butcombe boys playing rigby against The Downs

On Monday 3rd November 2008 the Butcombe Tag Rugby Club played their second fixture of the term against The Downs School.

Team Wagstaff were unable to prevent The Downs from running in 9 tries to their 6, despite some good individual performances.

Team Ingram ended the game 1 try up after an even match with tries being scored in turn by each team. Again there were some good individual performances led by top try scorer Toby Weale.

Thanks again to all our supporters for turning out in the cold, to Mrs Askew for organising the fixture and refreshments and to Mr Wagstaff for giving up his time to coach and referee. The boys really enjoy the opportunity to put their skills into practice in these fixtures.

Later this week the boys will take part in the opening of the 3G pitch at Beggar’s Bush and the Beaudesert Tag Rugby Festival, a busy and exciting week for everyone.

Saturday 10th November

Under 8 Hockey Festival

On Saturday 10th November eight girls from Butcombe represented the school in the Under 8 Hockey Festival at Beaudesert Park School. The aim of the Festival was not to win or lose but to enjoy, and learn about the game of hockey in a safe and fun environment.

Six schools took part: Beaudesert Park School, The Downs School, Dean Close, St Hughes, St Johns, and Butcombe (Clifton College). Each school played each other so in total, the girls had five hockey games to play. They were all exhausted by the end of the Festival, as one of our girls said, ‘I am usually in bed at this time on a Saturday morning!!!’ However a great time was had by all and the girls played extremely well; it was a pleasure to see their knowledge, understanding and skills develop and improve throughout the Festival. Other highlights of the morning were their first ever trip on the school mini bus and the picnic provided by Beaudesert School!!

Many thanks go to those who organised the Festival and to the parents who came to support the children and make it such a successful occasion. The girls that played are; Sorcha Trenouth, Claudia Harvey, Ella Holman, Emily Butchart, Poppy Watts, Bethan Hughes, Maisie Houlford and Charlotte Hamilton.

Thursday 8th November

Butcombe Versus BGS

On Thursday 8th November the girls from the Hockey Club played Bristol Grammar School at home on the Triple Courts. This was to be excellent practise for the Hockey Festival held on Saturday 10th November. Both teams were very equally matched and the girls played exceptionally well; the final result of the game was a draw, each team scoring two excellent goals! The girls are really beginning to work well together as a team and are fast learning the sporting etiquette of match play. Well done to all those that played and thank you to the parents that came and supported.

I arrived at Rugby. We played The Downs School it was fun and we enjoyed it although we lost 8-4. I enjoyed running around with my new friends and was really tired at the end. We scored some tries and although we lost we all really enjoyed it. I lost my shoe on the bus on the way back which was funny. I have found it again.

First we put our dirty boots on. Then our big coach called John came and showed us the big huge pitch. The Downs School turned up and came out onto the pitch. The coach showed us where the try line was and where the line out has to happen. We then started with a small ball and he passed to Louis and then he passed to me. I then sprinted up the wing and scored a try!! Then The Downs School started with a small ball and Matt passed to Declan and he dodged me and scored another try. The final score was 8-4 to the Downs School.

First we got our boots on and our seatbelts and the minibus drove us up to The Downs School. It was really exciting. It was half time and we had a team talk and some oranges and the game started again. We did a defence line and The Downs passed and we tagged them. Ollie got tagged as well, he then passed to Louis who scored a try. We were in the defence line again but we lost 8-4.
