In the Reception year activities are based upon the Foundation Stage Guidelines which is made up of six curriculum areas -

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Communication, Language and Literacy
  • Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy
  • Knowledge and Understanding of the World
  • Physical Development
  • Creative Development

We aim to provide a happy stimulating learning environment in which every child can develop their talents to their full potential.

The reception classes each have a teacher and a teaching assistant. The children have specialist music sessions and can take part in optional French and Ballet. Frequent visits to the zoo and local area enhance our curriculum further. In the Michaelmas Term, the Reception topics are – All about Me and Light and Dark. The All about Me topic involves learning about one another as we start the Reception year. Within the Light and Dark topic we explore a variety of light sources and the importance of light in different types of celebrations. We make Diva lamps for Divali and even have a ‘dark house’ to explore shadows.

During the Lent Term our topics are – Cold Places and Toys. Cold Places is a very exciting topic where we learn all about the Arctic and Antarctic. We go to the zoo for a 'Polar Experience' and re-tell the story of the Emperor penguins by dressing up! Within our toys topic we look at both old and new toys and a variety of programmable toys.

For the Summer Term our topics are – Tiny Creatures and Farms. Within our Tiny Creatures topic we look at pond life and life cycles. We give the children first hand experience of the life cycles of frogs and butterflies. Some of the children’s past experiences have involved a parent bringing in hissing cockroaches and beetle larvae! When we explore our Farm topic we have an educational visit to a farm in the countryside outside Bristol to support the children’s learning.
