Butcombe Rugby and 3G Pitch opening

Butcombe Rugby and 3G Pitch opening

It has been a busy week for the Butcombe Tag Rugby Club. After Monday’s game against the Downs School the boys were given the chance to play on the new 3G pitch at BB on Friday. Then on Saturday morning it was off to a Tag Rugby Festival at Beaudesert Park School.

The 3G pitch opened for business on Friday and the Tag Rugby Club were among the first people to play on the new surface. The boys were put into three teams and played each other in a mini tournament. The Ospreys, Red Dragons (do I detect a Welsh bias here!) and Harlequins competed well on the surface and were especially excited about playing under floodlights, a great experience for any sportsman. The Harlequins came out the winners and Benoit Godron was named as the player of the tournament by Mrs Askew and Mrs Ingram for his team spirit.

The team playing rugby

As always Beaudesert Park School hosted a great Tag Rugby Festival which gave all the boys the chance to play in 4 or 5 matches against a variety of schools. The Butcombe Braves and the Butcombe Bulldogs between them notched up 3 wins, 2 draws and 4 losses. A huge army of supporters cheered the boys on and the weather was kind to us (it was above freezing for the first time!). Thanks to Mr Wagstaff for coming along on what is a busy day for him and the First XV, to Mrs Bowring for her support and to all the parents who made the journey to Beaudesert.

The final match for the boys is on Monday 17th November against QEH, let’s hope it stays light until the end!

On Friday 7th November, the 3rd Generation pitch at Beggar Bush staged an opening match between a Bristol Sports XI – including two of our headmasters, Mark Moore and John Milne – and a Bristol Media XI.

The Media XI featured a number of the cast from BBC’s Casualty, GWR radio presenters, ITV & ITN newsreaders and an Evening Post reporter. The Sports XI included professional players from cricket, football, rugby and golf. Two of Clifton’s pupils – Harry Greenbury and Ilja Solomatins - also starred for the Sports XI.

The match was won 3-1 by the Bristol Sports XI, with two goals from Gloucestershire CCC cricketer and one from his team-mate, Chris Taylor. Players from both sides commented on the quality of this fantastic new facility and a re-match in 2009 is already being discussed.

Earlier in the afternoon Butcombe and The Pre School also used the new pitch. Butcombe staged a display of touch rugby under the watchful eye of Andy Wagstaff, while the Pre Under 10 football team were triumphant in their Coronation Cup match, beating Cheddar Grove 5-2 in a match of the highest quality.
