Butcombe Nursery celebrate Chinese New Year

Butcombe Nursery celebrate Chinese New Year

This year Butcombe Nursery commemorated Chinese New Year by learning about China, its peoples and traditions. Throughout the week children explored an array of Chinese-themed activities. Favourite art activities included constructing little dragons made of clay and paper, painting large Chinese dragons in bright colours and drawing or writing in Chinese characters.

Not all activities were centred on art. Children discussed pandas living in China and discovered lucky money envelopes and lanterns. They listened to the Tale of Chinese New Year with its legendary animal race across the river. Though few were betting on the Rat to get across first, children in Nursery were delighted to hear that 2010 is the Year of the Tiger, one of their favourites.

Pupils also learnt about Chinese culture. They particularly enjoyed looking at images of wonderful Chinese buildings and arches – and even more fun cooking and then tasting Chinese noodles and a vegetable stir fry. The chopsticks each child used were also a great success, though there are no plans just yet to swap them for the forks and knives in the lunch hall.

The Nursery’s Chinese New Year festival was completed when the children gathered in the playground to dance, clap, bang and stamp in order to wake the lion and dragon they had made, a celebration they shared with all their Butcombe friends.
