Easter Revision Courses

Aims and Objectives

A student studying in the Library

The course aims to fully motivate each student, boost their confidence and therefore maximise their examination performance. Its three principal objectives to achieve these aims are:

Subject revision that concentrates on the core features and key facts, patterns and principles of each subject and areas of particular difficulty, giving students renewed confidence and motivation.

Examination technique so that students are confident that they can demonstrate to the examiner the knowledge and skills appropriate to their maximum potential grade. Interpretation of questions, essay writing and problem solving are just some of the areas covered, guiding students towards better quality answers.

Examination practice is important so that students do justice to their abilities under examination conditions. Progress will be monitored closely as Tutors assess students’ strengths and weaknesses.

Course Tutors and Class Size

The Course Director personally selects each Tutor. They are all highly motivated, qualified teachers who are sensitive to the demands of each year group and the demands of public examinations. They are able to draw on this wealth of experience in preparing their students.

We work to a maximum size of 10 within each group, and often groups are much smaller than this, so that Tutors are able to give individual attention and directed tuition that will help improve the quality of grades at GCSE, AS and A2 Level. Students who attend the course clearly have the desire to succeed and Tutors aim to utilise this to help everyone achieve their potential. At the end of the course, a report written by the Tutor will be sent, which will provide information about their progress over the week. It will also include advice for efficient use of the time remaining before the examinations.

Recreation

Students relaxing

Periods of rest and relaxation are an important part of learning and revision and help to ensure minds are kept fresh and alert during this intensive course. We therefore encourage all students to take some exercise during the recreation periods, There are a number of facilities available on site to help unwind and recharge batteries (students should bring their own sports clothes and equipment although some equipment is provided). These include an indoor swimming pool and a fully equipped fitness and weights room as well as tennis, badminton, football and basketball. Students also have access to the Junior Common Room during recreation periods where they can relax, socialise and enjoy refreshments. Teaching staff are also available for informal discussions during these periods. In this way, we hope that the whole experience of learning and relaxing together will be of mutual benefit to all our students.

Accommodation

Students who undertake two subjects for revision are welcome to stay at the College. These residential students will be allocated a study bedroom in one of the College’s boarding houses on campus. Rooms may be single, twin or triple, so that students can get to know one another and support each other both in and outside the classroom. In addition, House Parents are available to supervise and assist students at all times during their stay and the Course Director will be available during course hours. We take great pride in the pastoral care offered on the course, since this is of great importance in ensuring students learn effectively. Meals to cater for all tastes will be served in the main dining hall.

Each subject is allocated 15 hours of intense tuition per week and 45 minutes of independent study time per day.

  • Our courses are offered both locally and nationally, and although we make every effort to match tuition with individual needs, students must realise that a revision course, however intensive, cannot be expected to cover all aspects of all specifications. Some courses are not board specific and aim to cover core material for that subject only.
  • Please pay close attention to the details of each course. If it does not appear we are offering the course details the student is studying, please contact us and we can give you further details.
  • Please take the time to ensure that you fill in all the required information. In particular, the specific details of the examining board and course title are essential if you are to make the best use of your time with us. It is also important that you include particulars of any modules that you wish to concentrate on during the course. The more we know of your needs, the better service we can provide.
  • Places on each course are strictly limited and will be given on a first come, first served basis, so early booking is strongly advised to avoid disappointment.
  • Minimum numbers are set for each course, and we will endeavour to give as much notice as possible where a course is cancelled.
  • Enrolment forms should be returned no later than Friday 23rd March 2012, with all balances to be received by this date also.
