Dear Parents,

The Upper Pre Play

Shiver me timbers, it’s cold! The Years 7 and 8 Play, ‘Pinafore Pirates’ was a tremendous success and well done to all those involved for such a heart-warming production; I’m now a Gilbert and Sullivan convert! The entire cast was superb and Mrs Beavis – ably assisted by Mrs Joyce and Mr Edgell, Mr Pafford, Mrs Lewarne, Mr Miles, Mr Davies, Mrs Whiteley, Mrs Bendle, Mrs Trenouth, Mrs Acheson, Miss Rump and Mrs Taplin – performed wonders with the sixty – plus pupils involved on stage; testament, again, to the incredible breadth of experience we give the pupils in the Pre.

Well done to:

Rugby Dinner

Mr Digby and Mr Breeze recently hosted a very successful rugby fundraising dinner at which the BBC TV sports presenter and Old Cliftonian, John Inverdale, was the guest speaker. The following prayer was said before dinner by our Chaplain, Rev. Taplin; its cleverness makes it worth passing on.

Almighty God,
Grant us determination as we ruck, maul and scrummage our way through life, and teach us the value of supporting one another. Enable us to have courage to stand our ground, and to be firm to tackle any problems we face. Give us vision to exploit the opportunities which open up for us, and the wisdom not to be offside too often. When our goal is in sight, may our aim be straight and true. Most of all, O Lord, we ask you to help us to try, and bring us to the conversion of our lives, in union with Jesus Christ.

Governors’ Visit

Several Governors (Council members) of Clifton College recently spent the day in the Pre, observing lessons and meeting the pupils. The visiting day was a tremendous success and all Council Members reported that they were deeply impressed with both the quality of relationships between staff and pupils and the quality of lessons observed.

Home Clothes Day

A Home Clothes Day was held two weeks ago in aid of The Bahay Bata Orphanage. The event was a great success and my compliments go to the pupils who were very sensible in their approach to this non-uniform day.

Congratulations to the following pupils who have recently been elected Twelves:

  • Sammy Matthews (Hankey’s)
  • Anna Fitzgerald (South Town)
  • Sophia Warner (Poole’s)
  • Jack Clark (Hartnell’s)
  • Drew Mitchell (North Town)

Traffic and Parking

One-way system: to facilitate free-flow of traffic and maximise our children’s safety, please can cars travel down the Avenue and up Northcote Road? There are still a number of parents who continue to travel up The Avenue, thus creating a log-jam in the mornings as well as making it difficult for the pupils to cross in relative safety.

Text Messaging

With the onset of bad weather, please can you ensure that we have your correct mobile phone number(s) in the coming weeks, particularly if you have changed your mobile phone number within the past 4-6 months. Contact Liz Pafford on if there are any changes.

Pre Carol Service

I look forward to seeing many of you at the Pre’s Carol Service next Friday December 10th at 4pm. The doors will be opened to parents as soon as the Upper School end of term assembly has finished; I would urge you to get to the Chapel as early as possible – remembering that parking can often be an issue, as the Upper School pupils will be departing from their Houses from 3:15 onwards. Our Carol Service is always very well attended and I would be grateful if you could be at Chapel at your earliest convenience so that we can arrange appropriate seating for all. Please can I also ask that if younger siblings are attending that they be accommodated on laps – where appropriate – to free up as much space as possible? Thank you for your support.

It was lovely to see so many of the Year 3 parents yesterday. The Housemasters and Housemistresses enjoyed meeting so many new parents.

It has been an incredibly busy term and what the children accomplish never ceases to amaze me. As with any great endeavour, the success depends on the combined efforts of all. I’m extremely proud of the effort that the staff has made this term – yet again – to ensure that the Pre remains in excellent health. The success of any school relies, without doubt, on strong relationships between pupils, staff and parents, as well as in good levels of communication; I am grateful for everyone’s contribution in these areas. Whilst there is still much to achieve the next week, I do hope that you have a very peaceful break when it arrives; Helen joins me in wishing you and your family a very Happy Christmas and a peaceful, prosperous New Year.

With kind regards,
