Clifton College WebsiteInter-House Sailing 2011A total of 10 Houses took to the waves on Thursday 9th June, competing for the handsome Sailing Shield. Many Houses entered younger teams this year who showed a lot of spirit and thoroughly enjoyed themselves sailing in the sunshine and steady breezes of Chew Lake. Hallward’s, the 2010 winners, took their boat for an early plunge into, rather than across the lake and were quickly followed there by Wiseman’s. Both teams quickly recovered from their respective capsizes’ and put in spirited performances. NT stayed on top of the water and got much quicker as the competition increased. West Town and Worcester both achieved an impressive win in the group stages. The finals between Worcester, Oakeley’s, Watson’s and East Town were extremely competitive and there was a great deal of close-quarters, tactical sailing as well as heated shouts of ‘protest’. After three races, the East Town team of Simon Green and Tommy Gill were clear victors, with Watson’s taking second place, Oakeley’s third and Worcester fourth. Whilst East Town dominated this year, it was good to see so many promising younger sailors from other Houses on the water, who might prise the shield away from East Town in the future. Thanks to all the competitors and to Mr Mills, Mrs Ballance and Mr Crocker for race marshalling, safety cover and photography.
