Wilbur and the Web

Butcombe Play

Butcombe transformed the Redgrave Theatre into Zuckerman's farmyard for this heart warming performance of Wilbur and the Web. The curtain was lifted at the start to reveal a bright, sunny setting in front of a rolling landscape. Led by Cowman Thomas Burbridge, the cast sang and danced a rousing opening number, every word was clearly heard at the back of the theatre and the enjoyment on the faces of the children was already there for all to see. The Narrators Mia Cryer, Francesca Dollin, Lalana Ghosh and Kate Richards kept the show rolling along with well timed, well delivered lines which helped to bring the many and varied characters in and out of the story. There were plenty of tricky steps to learn particularly in the song “Down the line”. Costumes were exceptional throughout and some stunning face painting added to the overall appearance. The massed ranks of dancing chickens were pure genius and the two rats, Templeton (Rocco Webb) and Ratty (Paul Cabrieres) were deliciously devious and dirty! Victor Dudley as Wilbur the Pig had a great speaking voice and was able to make himself heard, even when speaking “upstage” to the brave Evie Handley who played Charlotte the Spider only a few days after having her arm put in a cast. The old saying “The show must go on” must have been uttered more than once! The night skies projected onto the backcloth set the scene beautifully for Charlotte's terrific, radiant and humble web creations while there was just the right balance of scenery, props and make up to make this a very professional looking production. Congratulations must go to the Director Mrs Griffiths whose drive and enthusiasm made the show come to life. Musical Director Mrs Gillam with young musicians Anthony Moll (drums) and Charles Vaughan (Sax) gave great support from the pit. One of the highlights of the entire show was initially sung by the trio of Wilbur, Charlotte and Fern (Bella Green) which became an ensemble piece with all of the children joining in and singing beautifully in two parts. Bella played Fern with genuine warmth and Wilbur was always safe while she was around. The finale complete with hundreds of spiders was a great way to end proceedings. There are far too many people to mention everyone by name but rest assured this was a show to be proud of, well done to all involved.
