Clifton Under 11s Hockey Tournament

In challenging weather conditions Clifton entered two teams into the nineteenth Clifton College hockey tournament at Beggar Bush featuring 18 schools, some coming from as far as London, Truro and Oxford. Clifton’s B side gained some valuable experience playing against all the other school’s A teams.

The Clifton A team started the day slowly and struggled to get themselves into top gear, they found themselves in third position in their group having lost one, drawn one and won one only conceding a single goal. This meant they would play in the Plate competition rather than the Cup competition. The girls rallied round and started to perform to their true potential, playing very well to beat Richard Pate School 1 – 0. Two goal less draws against Truro Prep and St Edwards meant that the girls were still on course for the Plate final. A magnificent 2 – 0 victory over BGS secured that final place against The Downs School.

As the rain and wind continued to batter both teams they played out a great final, Clifton were on top throughout the first half and again dominating in the second half. The game was won with a single goal from a fine Corabella Hill strike.

The team worked tremendously hard to achieve success in the Plate competition, with fine defensive performances from Sammy Welsh, Hannah Parry and Grace Caple. Battling midfield performances from Rachel Fraser and Megan McDonnel along with great forward play from Holly Horton, Captain Kate Scrutton and Corabella Hill. A special mention to Mirium Dirnhuber in goal who kept seven clean sheets throughout the day.

The coach’s player of the day went to Sammy Welsh who was a rock at the back in every single game. Well done Sammy. The team should be proud of their efforts on a tricky day having played 8, won 4, drawn 3 and lost 1. Scoring 5 and conceding just one goal.

Well done to all the Clifton girls who took part in the tournament. Enjoy the gallery.
