Act of Remembrance

Clifton College CCF took part again this year in the Armistice Day Act of Remembrance at Whiteladies Road War Memorial on Friday 11 November.

Arranged and attended by Churches Together in Clifton, Cotham and Redland, and joined by Colonel Clive Fletcher-Wood OBE, local primary schools, the public and Clifton College CCF, over 100 people gathered for the short service. One of the wreaths was laid by Cadet Staff Sergeant J Graham and Major Michael Scaife read the end of the Kohima Epitaph: “When you go home, tell them of us and say, for your tomorrow, we gave our today”. This is a very welcoming and moving service which has grown in size year on year.

The Pre marked Remembrance with their traditional Chapel service on Saturday where speaker Dr Christopher Waller gave an excellent and poignant sermon. After the service as is customary the pupils left the Chapel by their Houses, removing their poppies from their lapels and placing them in the entrance of the Chapel as they left. The Pre then hosted a lunch in the Pre Hall for all of its Armed Forces parents, Upper School Combined Cadet Force staff and members of the School Council. In keeping with the routine of the Forces the lunch was a delicious curry.

The Upper School Service of Remembrance takes place on Sunday, with the CCF lining each side of the parapet from Memorial Arch to the Chapel and sees the highest attendance of any service in the School calendar. Excellent readings by the Head Master and James Heaven (ET); superb singing by the School choir with solo pieces by Harry Scrase and Anna John; and a tender and moving serman by School Chaplain Revd Kim Taplin were the hallmarks of a very special School service. A short walk in gloriously bright sunshine to Memorial Arch for the laying of wreaths by Chairman of Council Tim Ross; Head Master Mark Moore; OC Secretary Simon Reece and Contingent Commander of the CCF Cdr Stuart Scorgie; and followed by the Last Post played by Conor Giebus.
