Steve Backshall visits the PreSteve Backshall

The Pre were delighted to welcome naturalist, writer, BAFTA-winning television presenter and explorer Steve Backshall to the Redgrave Theatre where he spoke to Years 4, 5, 6 and 8GB. Steve Backshall’s popular BBC show "Deadly 60' sees him travelling the world in search of predators that are "Not just deadly to me, but deadly in their own world". On his visit to the Pre he thrilled the children with tales of diving with sharks, catching King Cobras, being chased by elephants and of the time he was bitten by a crocodile!

Mr Backshall told the children how fears of animals are learnt from parents, teachers and television and how there are actually no animals that should be irrationally feared if you educate yourself about them beforehand, citing sharks, snakes and spiders as examples.

We were incredibly lucky to have Mr Backshall join us and to be the very first audience on his brand-new lecture tour. His passionate, eloquent presentation was an inspiration to all and, judging by the pupils’ questions, certainly fired the imagination and, who knows, might have set some new dreams alight.
