Making Mathematics Count at Clifton College

UPDATE (5 May 2008)! Following his full marks in the Challenge, Chris Lee dropped only one mark out of 60 in the Intermediate Mathematical Olympiad, placing him 2nd out of 481 Year 10 qualifiers.

The Mathematics Department has been busy this academic year, and the examination period is not even upon us yet, although looming!

The Year 12 winners of the Bristol Schools Mathematics Competition

During Michaelmas Term Block I encountered the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust Senior Mathematics Challenge which produced its usual healthy crop of Gold, Silver and Bronze certificates, and Hamzaan Bridle qualified for the first round of the Senior Olympiad. We also hosted the twice-yearly Bristol Schools Mathematics Competition, and one of our Year 12 teams won their competition.

This term Block II have been in action. More awards followed in the Intermediate Mathematics Challenge, but this time round Christopher Lee scored full marks, which put him at the top of the pile of over 200,000 Year 9, 10 and 11 students nationally. He and Brian Yeh sat the first round of the Intermediate Olympiad in March and we await the results with bated breath.

We also hosted the Bristol Regional Finals of the UKMT Mathematics Team Challenge, where 20 teams of 4 students visited us for fun and games throughout the day (see photo 1). The competition involved puzzles (photo 4), team-work (photo 3) and even a relay race (photo 2), and our team consisting of Charlie Lindsay, Jonny Whitaker, Paul Song and Charlie Dowding came a creditable 6th out of 20 schools.
