Remembrance Day

Remembrance Day

In order to show their respect for the fallen, a small group helped the Percival librarians put-up a display of remembrance in the library during their ‘Clifton in the Community’ activity period. A make-shift field of hand-made poppies spilled out across the floor of the Percival Library while the display cabinet presented numerous objects from the two World Wars, a collection of war-time photos, library books, helmets and military equipment. As a finishing touch there is an over-hanging curtain of poppies above surrounded by artefacts from the wars.

We started by creating the centre piece which consists mainly of poppies. The poppies were made of three pieces of crepe paper, in the shape of an eight, held together by string. We folded the petals out so that the paper looked like poppies. The curtain is made up simply of string tied around the poppies holding them in place above the display. We then finished by arranging the artefacts amongst the display.

We are proud to announce that the display was well received by visitors including the Headmaster, Mr Mark Moore; the Marshal, Mr Paul Simcox; and Chairman of the Council, Mr Andrew Thornhill Q.C. A special thanks to Mr Peter Stanley and Commander Scorgie for helping to make the display reality and for generously lending us precious artefacts from the two World Wars and providing pieces from their own personal histories. We would also like to thank librarian Lauren Walker for imagining, planning and preparing this display with us.
