Clifton College WebsiteFun at the Dragon Boat FestivalSunday 13 June saw a group of 20 boys from East Town, along with Jonathan Thomson-Glover, Lindsay Telling, Michael Whitton and Allan Wilkie, setting up camp at 9am on Bristol City Docks in preparation for the Bristol Breakfast Rotary Club Dragon Boat Festival. The first half of term was spent fundraising for Childline, and especially The Childrens Voice Appeal, together with some amazing donations to their Justgiving account. A whooping £1,500 has been raised so far! The boys have bag packed in Sainsbury’s, had a cake sale and Lindsay has cooked more bacon baps for them to sell than she would like to remember! It has all been in a good cause, so a really big thank-you to everyone who has been involved. The Dragon Boat Race Day was amazing and although the race times were not good enough to get the East Town Tigers team into the semi-finals, everyone had a great time. All the boys had two races, with some boys volunteering to help with The Princes Trust Team 2 Boat, so they worked even harder and an appreciative thanks go to them too. TG even took on the role as drummer for one race and managed to do surprisingly well, despite comments about how much more fun it would have been had he fallen in! Apart from getting very wet anyway, the weather was fantastic and with the BBQ in full swing it was a great atmosphere with parents dropping in during the day. It was certainly a fun day to remember. Fundraising still continues apace too, in the hope of raising over £1,600 which will pay for a new Childline counsellor to be trained – so please do dip into your pockets for this excellent cause if you have not already contributed. As all the Worcester House crew finally arrived at the Bristol Docks, it was mutually agreed that we could have not asked for a better day for this Dragon Boat Racing event. The sun was out, the sky was blue and the water was clear. There was much excitement amongst the girls. As the first race loomed there were many nervous girls, myself included, but as we all safely got into the large Dragon boat many nerves were calmed as we all realised there was no possible way that we could fall out and drown - or so we thought. With Mrs Hallworth as our drummer and a crew of 16 including Mr Cuesta and Mr Beever we managed to make it through our first race. We had the morale that ... "it is not all about the winning, just about the taking part". It was clear that up against full grown adult crews there was barely a competition. We completed two more races, coming second in one of the races which was a great surprise to many, and after our last race we were all tired and ready to relax in the sun. We all enjoyed the BBQ and after all our races had finished and girls began to disperse there was still a strong sense of House Spirit. Not only being there as a House that lifted all our spirits but also the feeling of achievement that we had raised over £1,000 through fundraising for the charity Childline. As a House, we are thankful for all parents efforts to help us with our fundraising and we have almost reached our target. We would have not done it without all the girls in the House and all their parents which have sponsored us and help us with our fundraising efforts.
