Clifton College WebsiteOld Cliftonian Golfing Society![]() All Old Cliftonians are welcome to join the Golf Society after leaving School. This short leaflet tells you about our activities. As yet we have still to welcome our first Lady Member- they are invited to join. Members under age 21 join as “Juniors”; Masters/Ex Masters at School may join also as “Honorary Members”. The Society was formed in 1926. The present Captain (2008) is Alan Mann; he is a Member of Temple near Marlow, Huntercombe near Henley, and Thurlestone in South Devon. SubscriptionsThis is £20 pa, payable by Bankers order every August. This pays for our modest Expenses, and helps defray the cost for those who enter the Public School Competitions where we normally contribute 50%/75% of the Entry Fees. We also subsidise younger members thanks to a Legacy Fund left by an OC. For other Matches, those participating normally pay their own Green Fees, Supper etc. “Juniors” pay £5pa and the “Masters” are asked to make a donation of £5 (min) pa. CommitteeThis comprises the Captain, Past Captain (John Scott, London) and the Hon Sec and Hon Treasurer. At this date Bob Bennett is the Hon Sec (South Town to 1947) and Geoff Clements the Hon Treas (South Town to 1961). Match ManagersFor each event we ask, or persuade, a member to act as Match Manager; chose the Teams, arrange the dates etc. For most Public School events the lower handicap players are needed, but for other Matches all can ask to play; playing off handicap as we do every June at The Berkshire for our big Annual event, followed by the AGM. FixturesA Fixture card goes out in January with a Newsletter. This is followed in March by a list of all the events for members to tell us which games they wish to support. Then the Match Managers will be in touch with further details/costs etc. Main Events![]() The famous Halford Hewitt for Public Schools is the big Spring event. This is played at both Royal Cinque Ports, Deal, and Royal St Georges, Sandwich- against 63 other schools. We were finalists in 1993. And we won in 2010 for the first time ever! A fantastic achievement. The Peter Keynon Bowl is played at the same time at Littlestone, where Clifton Teams are the current holders (and runners up also in 2008). The Brent Knoll Bowl at Burnham in March is also a keen fought Match, again for the best Team we can field. As above the AGM is held at The Berkshire with a 36 hole event; great day! Other annual matches are the Bernard Darwin and Senior Darwin , played at Woking and the Grafton Morrish, is held in Norfolk. And in June, Little Aston fields the Midlands Public Schools Competition, a great day out for two rounds of foursomes, off handicap. Moving nearer to Bristol, we have a large gathering each year for the Bristol Branch Match; games against “the School”/Masters, and other Old Boys Clubs, as shown on the Fixture List. The ages of our members varies considerably. We have approx 90 members, and are keen to recruit new names, so do tell any OC’s you meet. If you get the annual Old Cliftonian Magazine we get an article in each edition, plus photo. Ties and SweatersWe have our own silk tie and embroidered dark blue sweaters. Details will be sent to Members. Do join and meet old friends, and have a happy game of golf! Bob Bennett Hon Sec © 2006-12 Clifton College | |||||||
