Clifton College WebsiteArtThe visual arts make a vital contribution to the school curriculum by encouraging children to think creatively, to make decisions, to experiment, to explore and make discoveries of their own. These are adventurous processes requiring a balance within the curriculum that safeguards the promotion of self-expression, and builds the confidence in children to happily take risks.
As highlighted in the recent ISI inspection, the Art Department produces work of an exceptionally high standard. We emphasise the use of ICT, we recognise close links with Technology, we promote language skills by giving opportunities to use a specific art and design vocabulary, we strive to see where links can be made with other subjects, and we stress the importance of drawing as a means to broaden visual experience and develop visual literacy. We often invite 'Artists in Residence' to establish workshops in the art studios, and we have recently formed a strategic liason with the Royal West of England Academy, who encourage our pupils to use their public galleries in order to engage with current exhibitions. John Grice trained in Painting, Illustration and Printmaking at Plymouth, Bristol and Cardiff Schools of Art, graduating in 1976. He is a practising artist and he has exhibited his work in group shows at the Royal West of England Academy,Bristol; Victoria Museum and Art Gallery, Bath; Plymouth Museum and Art Gallery; Bristol Guild Gallery, and the Alveston Gallery, Penzance. Lara Saxby trained in Sculpture at Chelsea College of Art and completed a Masters in Sculpture at the Royal College of Art, graduating in 2005. She went on to teach Art at Charterhouse School, where she worked for five years before coming to teach Art at the Pre.
