Clifton College WebsiteEnglish in Year 5Year 5Pupils in year 5 have most of their lessons with a class teacher. They are encouraged to read every night. The children continue working towards levels 3 - 4 of the National Curriculum and building on the experience of the previous year. Visits to the Library and classroom reading lessons develop the pupils’ enthusiasm for reading and encourage progress. Pupils are given a wide range of written assignments to develop their writing skills. Technical features are emphasised so that pupils are able to express their ideas and views neatly and accurately. Progress is assessed through grades, a mid-year informal writing test and exams in June - we use the QCA Optional Year 5 Tests - which begin to concentrate on specific SATs requirements; a variety of resources is available to support all areas, including a literacy coursebook, a focus on spelling with sets of the Letts ‘Just Spelling’ series used, literacy workbooks and the Galore Park 'So You Really Want to Learn English'. All teachers ask pupils to keep a record of their private reading in their reading records. We try to ensure that year 5 will have sessions listening to visiting storytellers, authors and actors. © 2006-12 Clifton College | Prep School NewsPres Athletics Success Family fun at the UK's largest free nature festival | ||||||
