Clifton College WebsiteYear 6 Trip to Exmoor"On the 19th of May, Year 6 went to Exmoor National Park. We split into two groups and our class went to a road in Dunster where we listed the houses, shops, pubs and hotels in our booklets." (S.Raymond) "The old yarn market is a 17th century sheltered market where people can sell things." (L. Redman) "The other group went off with a National Park Ranger to talk about the aims of the National Park. The main points are Conservation of the natural and the built (trees and villages), benefit and enjoyment for the people and the social and economic well-being of the local community" (C. Honeyman) "At Dunster, we had a base map. We went through the village marking on the base map every building and whether it was tourist, resident or both. By the village there is a watch tower that was owned by the Luttrel family. We did both sides of the road in Dunster village. In the centre of the road, there was a yarn market where you could sell things like wool. It was built by George Luttrel who owned the watch tower. After that, we came back to the Visitor Centre and swapped the two groups around so my group went with the Ranger to talk about the land in the park. He had a projector which told us the things he was talking about. He said there were 700 miles of paths! He also explained that they can change the whole landscape with tractors and how tourists destroy the land by leaving litter and walking on paths. He said we should think back about 500 years ago and showed us a picture of the town as it was then. We then walked up by the castle and had lunch. After that we walked around the land and on the way saw a Tithe Barn which is where people used to pay their taxes. We walked a long way, saw some deer and sketched a view of the land."
