The Library

Staff
Librarian:
Assistant: Miss Sophie Johns BA (Hons) MA

The Library was converted from two geography classrooms into a learning resource centre at the heart of the school during the summer of 1990 and was recently refurbished during the summer of 2007.

The newly refurbished Library was officially opened by the Chairman of Council, Andrew Thornhill QC, on 1 December 2007. It now provides a balance between information technologies/media and the printed word.

The ground floor has been totally refurbished with new shelving, soft seating, Librarian’s counter, display units, glass doors and plasma TV (which will show relevant TV programmes, BBC news 24, DVDs). The Library has a class set or wireless headphones, so that the television can be viewed without disturbing other library users. Library OPAC (online public access catalogue) is accessible on a computer on the Librarian's counter for students to search the Library's catalogue. The school’s catalogue is an online "union catalogue" which allows students and staff to search all the libraries in the College.

The Library benefits from a new mezzanine floor accessed by a spiral staircase. On this floor is a glass enclosed area with 12 student computers and 1 computer for a teacher. This room also contains a SMART board to enable it to be used as a teaching room for information skills lessons, English, EFL and research lessons for smaller classes. There is also a small AV area with 2 computers for audiobook/CD listening/DVD viewing and an area to store DVDs, CDs and other media. The EFL section will also be located in this area. The mezzanine floor will also provide space for an expanding collection of teacher's resources and professional literature to support their work in the classroom.

The collection includes an extensive range of children’s fiction and non-fiction to support the curriculum and also contains an expanding choice of DVDs, CDs, magazines and online resources. The Library is open from 8.45am-5pm Monday to Friday and from 8.45am-12.30pm on Saturdays. Pupils may borrow up to 5 items at one time for 3 weeks, with the option to renew them if they would like them for longer. We often have author visits and other exciting activities. Please see the Preparatory School Library Events pages for further information. The chartered Librarian has 8 years experience of working in school libraries including; St. Paul’s Girls’ School, London Westminster School and Harrow International School, Bangkok. The Librarian is supported by a Library Assistant part-time.

The newly refurbished Library was officially opened by the Chairman of Council, Andrew Thornhill QC, on 1 December 2007. It now provides a balance between information technologies/media and the printed word. The English department has developed a love of modern children’s fiction in the students at the Pre and the Library continues to support their good work. The Library will provide a venue for future author visits and book fairs, and will also provide a computer suite, flat screen TV and an audiovisual area.
