The criteria we use in assessing candidates for entry throughout the College is explained in the College Admissions Policy document.

Pupils joining the Preparatory School either from Butcombe or from other schools at age 8 (Year 4) will be assessed in English, Mathematics and Verbal Reasoning in the Lent or Summer Term preceding entry. The minimum standard required is the expected national Standard Attainment Test (SAT) level for the age group i.e., Level 2.

Pupils wishing to join the Preparatory School in Years 5 and 6 will be assessed in English, Mathematics and Verbal Reasoning. The minimum standard required is the expected national Standard Attainment Test (SAT) level for the age group.

At age 10 (Year 6) all pupils will be assessed in English, Mathematics and Verbal Reasoning in the Lent term. The minimum standard required is the expected national Standard Attainment Test (SAT) level for the age group i.e., Level 4. Pupils who do not attain this level may continue at the Preparatory School but cannot be guaranteed a place in the Upper School at the end of Year 8.

Pupils wishing to join the Preparatory School from other schools at age 11 (Year 7) will also be assessed in English, Mathematics and Verbal Reasoning in the preceding Lent Term.
