Clifton College WebsiteAfricaOver the Michaelmas 2010 half term break, Julie Molesworth and I joined an official Camps International staff recce to Kenya. The purpose of the visit was to introduce us to venues and activities to be experienced by pupils booked on to Camps International Tours over the coming year. For us, the main focus was our time spent in Tsavo, some hundred miles inland from Mombasa, where our year 8 pupils will be staying this coming February, for what promises to be the ‘experience of a lifetime’. The Camp is situated about 10 miles off the main Nairobi to Mombasa highway in the middle of Tsavo West, one of Africa’s largest Nature Conservation areas. It is a permanent Camp with well-appointed ‘bandas’ which provide comfortable sleeping accommodation for groups of between eight and twelve children. There are also appealing open-air eating areas, a recreational area which is situated around the all-important camp fire, a Medical Centre and clean, safe bathroom blocks. The key areas of the Camp are linked by attractive paving, making walking from place to place – particularly at night – easier. Cultural and community-based activities, such as interaction with children from local schools and the opportunity of working with a local ‘Women’s Group’, under the leadership of the legendary Mama Masi, enable the pupils a taste of real African life, whilst still able to enjoy the breath-taking setting and, of course, the abundance of wild life resident in the park. A truly remarkable week: enjoy the photos! David Pafford © 2006-12 Clifton College | |||||||
