Hartnell’s is a Senior Boys’ House which has an equal number of Boarders and Day-Boys. The building, formerly known as Matthew’s House was, until the 90s, traditionally the home of the Preparatory School Headmaster: it now comprises the Housemaster’s ‘Private Side’, flats for both the Resident Matron and the Resident Gap Tutor and accommodation for up to 45 boys. The basement contains a large Prep and Registration Room, a Computer and Games Room, the Laundry Room and various changing and showering facilities. On the first floor, there is a large House Hall, which is the ‘hub’ of the House both during the day and during the evenings. After prep, the boarders have a snack supper here and at one end is a comfortable lounge in which they can play games, or relax in front of Sky or their favourite DVD. The second and third floors contain the Dorms, which vary in size from 3 to 6 beds, all of which are single and include lockable storage space.

The House is run as a family and we pride ourselves on the warm and friendly atmosphere. The boys are encouraged to develop an awareness and respect of the needs of others and are expected to make the very most of all opportunities — academic, sporting, musical and social — which come their way. For both the Boarders and the Day-Boys, Hartnell’s is ‘a home away from home’, where the individual matters.
