Clifton College WebsiteSouth Town
South Town relocated to Merry House in the Avenue as a day girls' house in the early 90s. It occupies two floors of a large Victorian building below the Science and Music department of the school. At present the house accommodates 56 girls between the ages of 8 and 13, six house staff and two matrons. On the ground floor we have a main assembly/music practice room, a work room for prep sessions with six computers, a café style kitchen, a study and a co-ed pool and table tennis room which is shared with North Town boys. Our changing rooms, showers and toilets are on the floor below. South Town is very much a 'home from home' for our girls during the day. We are open from 8:00am to 7:30pm when the house is their base between lessons and games sessions. Our emphasis is placed on creating a happy, co-operative atmosphere where our girls can socialise together and participate in activities across the year groups. We are keen that 'South Towners' see themselves as part of a large family group as well as being important members of Clifton College Pre. We are fortunate to attract girls who exhibit a variety of talents; academic, artistic, musical and sporty. A number of our sportswomen have represented the school at national level in hockey, cross country and swimming, while we are proud to have two young prodigy violinists who are regularly performing on the professional circuit. Most girls in the house play one or two musical instruments, so our proximity to the music school is truly a bonus! Blessed with enthusiastic, energetic girls and house staff, South Town is often the centre of social functions. The girls are encouraged to help organise Charity functions, house competitions, co-curricular activities and our trips to outside events. it is encouraging to witness how quickly they develop a strong house spirit and identity. I am now enjoying my fourth year as Housemistress of South Town. I have been at Clifton for 14 years and have taught in various departments ranging from two years as a Year 2 class teacher in Butcombe, PE teaching throughout the Pre and Butcombe and at present I teach Maths and Science. My three daughters have been through the school, starting in South Town, moving on to West Town and Hallward’s in the Upper School and are now all at various universities. ![]() © 2006-12 Clifton College | |||||||
