Clifton College WebsiteLiving with ParadoxSometimes God seems so distant and his silence can be deafening. However, there are also moments when the Divine seems closer than our own heartbeats. The metaphors in the Bible describe God as a loving father, a wise king, an impartial judge, a watchful shepherd, a creative potter, a devouring lion, a nurturing mother-bird, a consuming fire and an immovable rock. Each of these graphic images emphasizes some aspect of God''s nature, and they each evoke a response, but ultimately any definition of God must always be beyond the capacity of human language. God is intimate love and unfathomable mystery. Life in the Kingdom of God means living with paradox. God is both transcendent and immanent. He is far and near. He is above and below. He is beyond and within. 15 April 2008 © 2006-8 Clifton College |
