Clifton College WebsiteChrist as MotherMothering Sunday is always on the fourth Sunday in Lent. There are differing views of its origin. Some point to the ancient custom, in parts of England, of people visiting their mothers on that day. Others stress the practice of visiting the Cathedral or mother church of their Diocese. Still others cite a particular phrase in the traditional Epistle reading for the fourth Sunday in Lent – “Jerusalem........which is the mother of us all.” (Galatians 4. 26) In some churches there is a special focus upon Mary, the mother of Jesus. Mother Julian of Norwich was a fourteenth century anchoress and mystic. Her writings were based upon her reflections on the visions she experienced. In her Revelations of Divine Love, Julian explored the motherhood of Mary and also the image of Christ as mother: So our Lady is our mother, in whom we are all enclosed and born of her in Christ, for she who is mother of our saviour is mother of all who are saved in our saviour; and our saviour is our true Mother, in whom we are endlessly born and out of whom we shall never come. 12 March 2010 © 2006-12 Clifton College | Clifton College NewsVery Superstitious.
