The Art Department at Clifton College consists of three full time and two part time members of staff. We are fortunate in having a team of varied individuals with their own specialist skills. The Director Mr Allan Wilkie is a Fine Art Painter and Printmaker. Ms Jane Wolf is a Fine Art Painter and Textiles Artist. Mrs Deirdre Houghton is a Ceramicist and a Sculptor. Mrs Helen Skatun is an Art Historian and Mr Paul Wigginton is a Photographer and Technician.

We believe that Art can help to show students a way to find out more about their humanity.

As a department we balance the various disciplines and encourage students to explore a range of approaches to art and provide them with the necessary resources to do so. We have three drawing and painting studios (two of which are used for block two teaching) equipped with an etching press, four flat screen shuttle computers, colour inkjet printers, scanners and an A1 colour printer. The Ceramics/Sculpture workshop is equipped with a kiln, a spray booth and an extruding machine. Our History of Art classroom has an excellent selection of books, videos and computer software. We have a fully equipped darkroom with six enlargers, studio lights and a backdrop. All classrooms are equipped with digital projectors and screens.

Our main disciplines are drawing and painting, sculpture and history of art with photography, printmaking, critical studies, ICT, slab building, throwing, casting and printed textiles being taught as supporting disciplines. We went on a trip to Paris at Easter 2009 which the pupils enjoyed very much.

The department’s policies hang on the structures of the National Curriculum at Key Stage Three and Four as well as at AS and A2 Level. Our primary purpose is to be able to implement those effectively and enable all pupils to reach their potential in examinations.

In addition to this we feel that it is important to offer the opportunity for pupils to use the department and its facilities for recreation, even if they have not selected art for GCSE or AS/A2 Level.

Art at Clifton College

Clifton has always had a strong tradition in art. Not only in producing contemporary artists but also the Bloomsbury Art Critic Roger Fry, an Old Cliftonian whose legacy lives on in scholarships to the College.
