Economics and Business Studies Trip

On Friday 17 November, a group of Sixth Form Economics students visited some of the UK’s most influential financial institutions.

First stop was the Bank of England. Here the students were given a talk on monetary policy and the Bank’s role in ensuring monetary and financial stability in the UK. They then had a chance to look round the Bank’s museum, taking in the history of money.

Lunch was taken on the top floor of Lehman Brothers’ impressive premises at Canary Wharf. They were then given a presentation on the functioning of a major investment bank and possible career opportunities.

The afternoon was spent at the London Stock Exchange, where the students were given training in the functioning of stock markets. As part of this, they were able to watch a live feed of the closing auction, following the development of Vodafone PLC’s trading price.

The day was a tremendous success, both in terms of providing students with an insight into the workings of the institutions they study, but also broadening their horizons in terms of career opportunities; many already have their eye on glamorous internships and graduate recruitment programmes.
