Fasching (Carnival)

Pupils at Fasching

'Fasching' and 'Fastnacht' fall during the build up to the Christian period of Lent and fasting, but the origins of 'Carneval' pre-date Christianity. It is an event where many Germans basically let their hair down, go crazy and dance, drink and eat before Lent. Women also go around with a pair of scissors and try to see how many ties they can cut off the men's necks. This is called 'Altweiberfastnacht'. Also every year there are crazy parties and people dress up in really weird costumes.

Pupils at Fasching

On Monday the 1st February we went to a Fasching Party at Badminton Girls School. We had lots of quizzes, some of which were hard and others easy, about places, people and things. Our team, unfortunately, came 4th, I think, although a team including Megan Westley and Billy Millford (Yr 9) actually won. There was a snack table filled with bits, from crisps to these weird things which were like creamy white fluff covered with chocolate – really tasty! Actually called 'Schaumküsse' or 'foam kisses!'

The atmosphere was friendly and fun with lots of laughter, and quite a lot of German was spoken.

The event was very good and I would definitely go again, especially if I won more Kinder eggs!
