Choir Trip to Oxford

On the 26th January the Clifton College choir were transported to the enchanting and ancient town of Oxford to sing Evensong at Merton College chapel. We were fortunate enough to have the opportunity to sing in the medieval chapel, that has been a place of worship for over 750 years.

We started by singing the Preces, a short opening to the service. We then sang ‘Magnificat’ in G (Stanford), with Elleri Hughes singing the soprano solo. It was a truly beautiful piece, with some very special moments. After the second reading, the choir sang ‘Nunc Dimittis’ with Conrad Heald singing the baritone solo. The atmosphere was wonderful, whilst singing this piece. Then after the Apostles Creed we sang further responses, which comprised of singing responses to the chaplain, the Reverend Dr Simon Jones.

Our anthem came at the end of the service, and we sang ‘O Thou the Central Orb’ by Charles Wood. Members of the congregation described this piece of music as exquisite, and it was made even more so by the acoustics within the archaic Chapel.

It was such a wonderful experience to sing in such a beautiful place, and the choir will always remember this very special trip.

Afterwards the choir all went to Pizza Express for some well-earned food!
