Clifton College WebsiteThe Army SectionOfficer Commanding:
Capt J.H. Hughes The emphasis of work in the Army Section is on teamwork and discipline. Not simply rigidly imposed parade ground discipline (although we take great pride in the quality of our Inspections) but rather the self-discipline that is required through life. Cadets are taught to safely handle and shoot rifles, and to treat them with the respect they deserve. They will experience battle drills adopted by the Army through a testing programme of section and platoon manoeuvres. Their initiative and organisational ability are tested by their participation in individual and team tasks. In addition, cadets are taught resilience and endurance by learning how to live and administer themselves in the field (self reliance), regardless of the conditions. On becoming an NCO, senior cadets have many opportunities to practise their leadership skills. They are employed as instructors on training afternoons. The NCO’s have to be confident in both the material they are covering and in their management and people skills. Having fun is important too. Opportunity for adventurous training is an integral part of the programme, whether in the guise of kayaking or climbing. These activities are not only enjoyable, but they allow cadets to test themselves physically and mentally, often being well outside their own comfort zone. We are fortunate in having excellent links with many Regiments and units of the British Army and Royal Marines. Presentations from and visits to these Regiments form a valuable and interesting addition to the syllabus laid down for the Army Proficiency Certificate, as well as broadening the cadet’s wider knowledge. The opportunity for first hand experience of Army life is available to our Army Cadets. If this is grasped fully, membership of the section is interesting, fulfilling, exciting and challenging. The highlight of the year is Annual Camp, which may occur in the final week of the summer term or at the beginning of the summer holidays. It is a requirement that all 4th form Army cadets attend this camp and it is a great way to finish off the 4th form. Cadets seeking promotion are expected to volunteer for camp to act as NCO’s during this important and most enjoyable week. © 2006-12 Clifton College | Upper School NewsFamily fun at the UK's largest free nature festival Hockey success for Lily Owsley Schools' German Poetry Competition | ||||||
