This booklet is written for Cliftonians and their parents to inform them of the opportunities presented by the CCF organisation. Opportunity is the key word. There are many diverse activities available for pupils within the CCF, each one presenting a slightly different challenge, but all of them are designed to release and realise the potential of the individual pupil.

The Combined Cadet Force is not a dogmatic organisation, although there are some matters we do take extremely seriously. We like our Cadets to be smart in appearance, to be courteous and thoughtful and to have respect for the structure of the CCF.

The Combined Cadet Force at Clifton is a positive influence in the personal development of many Cliftonians. If the opportunities are taken and the challenges are accepted, the benefits gained by all can be immeasurable.

The Aims of the CCF

The broad function of the CCF within Clifton College is to provide a disciplined youth organisation in a school so that students may develop powers of leadership by means of training to promote the qualities of responsibility, self reliance, resourcefulness, endurance, perseverance and tolerance for each other.

There is a certain amount of military training, which is designed to give young people a chance to exercise responsibility and leadership, to provide them with some knowledge of our defence forces, and to encourage those who might be interested in becoming members of the Armed Services.

Adventure Training and Challenge Pursuits are seen as a very important part of the Cadet Experience, I define it as,

“Challenging outdoor training in specified activities, involving controlled exposure to risk, to develop leadership, teamwork, physical fitness, moral and physical courage among other personal attributes and skills vital to the development of the rounded cadet.”

The work we do is not without risk, I would like to think we are risk aware rather than risk averse.
