Clifton College WebsiteSummer Course ActivitiesArmy Summer Camp 2009 ReviewCourses started off at the end of term with 20 cadets going on the Army Central Camp at CROWBOROUGH and 12 Cadets going to the Clyde Fleet tender at HMS NEPTUNE on the west coast of Scotland – see separate reports below for more detail on these. They then gathered pace for the remainder of July and August with courses varying in length from a few days to over 10 days. 2 cadets went to the Royal Naval Warfare course at HMS COLLINGWOOD in Portsmouth where cadets are introduced to the tactical aspects of Naval warfare using technical equipment and practical application as an introduction to anti air, surface and submarine warfare and the role of the warfare officer on a modern warship. 1 cadet went to the Cadet Leadership Course at the CTC Frimley Park. 6 cadets went to HMS BRISTOL for the central summer camp designed to give a broad spectrum of activities including fire fighting, practical seamanship, assault course, sea training, develop self reliance and basic leadership skills as well as ship visits. 2 cadets went to RNAS CULDROSE on the pilots and observers course. This course is designed to familiarise cadets with the RN aircrew training and squadrons operating from HMS SEAHAWK with their current aircraft – Jetstream, Sea King, and Merlin, hands on opportunities in the Sea King simulator and flights on the Jetstream aircraft. 2 cadets went to the Joint Service Diving Centre at Fort Bovisand in Plymouth for the BSAC Ocean Diver course, the entry level course for all service recreational divers. 2 days of pool and lectures and 4 days of open water work. A tough course as you are on the go from 0600 till 2230 with short beaks for meals! 1 cadet went to MT2 which is an introduction to military training with respect to the Royal Navy and Royal Marines. Activities include boarding and searching ships, “fast rope” techniques, high speed boats, security routines and Royal Marine drills “in the field”. 3 cadets went to Exped Skills based on the southern end of Dartmoor covering leadership skills, mountain safety, camp craft and of course the obligatory navigation in its many forms. 1 cadet went to BRNC camp designed to give an introduction to life as an officer in the Royal Navy and offer a broad spectrum of activities including practical seamanship and boat driving on the picturesque river dart, assault course, develop self reliance and leadership skills as well as the fun and entertainment on the parade ground. 1 cadet went to HMS TEMARAIRE the RN physical training school at Portsmouth for the RLSS for the National Pool lifeguard course. A challenging course by any standards but done the "Navy way" its a bit more of a challenge – not really for the faint hearted or weak swimmers amongst you. Hydrographic and Meteorology Aquatint course designed to familiarise cadets with the principals involved in the 2 subjects and to see how the RN makes the best use of these skills when operating at sea.
