Drama

Clifton’s Drama was particularly encouraged by the building of The Redgrave Theatre. Officially opened by Old Cliftonian Sir Michael Redgrave in 1966, it was one of the first purpose-built school theatres in this country and is still one of the most attractive and best-equipped of its kind, offering a busy and varied programme of some 40 or more productions every year. The school itself mounts at least one major production each term: the school play in November (sometimes a large-scale musical); a joint staff and pupils’ play in January; the House play festival in February and a junior play, for pupils in their first two years at Clifton, in May.

Clifton’s proximity to Bristol’s Theatre Royal and Hippodrome theatres, and our strong links with Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, allow frequent opportunities to see professional work.

Pupils are taught drama skills including backstage work and many are prepared for speech and drama examinations.
