Clifton College WebsiteCorner ClubWe are currently volunteering at the Corner Club for our Clifton in the Community placement. The club has been set up for elderly members of the community who live in and around the Clifton area; it offers activities and a social group for them every Monday. One of the skills we have learnt from this club is patience, and how to deal better with people in new situations. Many of the members of the club are slightly deaf and suffer from memory loss, so it is important to be patient and bear with them. As well as this, it has been an opportunity to give back to the community, even if it is just by chatting with these people, serving them tea and ensuring they have a good time. It has been very beneficial as we have built up good relations with a few of the members, including a lovely lady called Connie who is 98. Over the weeks we have got to know her better, and it is so fulfilling and interesting to listen to her stories and reminiscing about her past. It is also nice to feel so appreciated by these men and women who even at their age are still so full of life and happiness, and know that we are making a difference in their lives, through simple communication skills.
