The Duke of Edinburgh's Award: Bronze

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Bronze Award is open to pupils in the Fourth Form. To achieve this over-subscribed and prestigious Award pupils must demonstrate determination, commitment, organisation, teamwork and physical capability. The Bronze Award is made up of the following sections: Volunteering, Physical, Skill and Expedition. All of these sections are explained in more details on the Duke of Edinburgh's Awards website: www.dofe.org.

The cost of participating in the Duke of Edinburgh's Bronze Award has been kept to a minimum. There is a charge of £12.00 for the Bronze information pack and record book as well as £90 to cover all the expedition section costs.

The Expedition Section

Probably the most demanding and enjoyable section of the Award is the Expedition section. In this section pupils have to work as a team to plan, prepare and be completely self sufficient on a 2 day hiking/camping expedition (unaccompanied) in the New Forest. Before pupils are given permission to hike without adult supervision they have to pass their expedition training.

Expedition training consists of various School-based Tuesday sessions from 5pm–6pm (9 sessions throughout the year – see programme below) and a local navigation skills day walk. If pupils attend all of the expedition training, they can then progress onto their practice expedition on the Mendip Hills. The practice expedition provides the ideal opportunity to prepare themselves for their qualifying expedition (assessed) in the New Forest. Although both the practice expedition and the qualifying expedition involve the pupils walking unaccompanied, staff are always in the area in case of emergencies.
