Teacher training with a difference

Teacher training with a difference

David Richardson, Head of Physics, recently spent part of his summer working in Rwanda. In collaboration with the Institute of Physics, David trained Rwandan teachers to use different pieces of apparatus to demonstrate principles taught in Physics. The latest development of the project was the completion of a workshop to produce this equipment in Rwanda itself.

The vision is for the apparatus to be distributed across Africa.

Each year the Institute send out £5,000 worth of equipment and train teachers on its use. The equipment is then donated to the schools at the end of the training.

Last week David had the opportunity to attend a talk on "Science and Technology in Africa" by the Rwandan President, Paul Kagame.

"Hearing the President's ideas and vision for his country and ways to share his experience with neighbouring African states was inspiring. I also got to speak to people who were excited about the project I have been running and who have a desire to continue the financial backing of the project in Rwanda."
