Cliftonian BBC Young Musicians

Clifton College is extremely proud that two pupils, cellist Rosie Stoner (L6th, HH) and violinist Julia Hwang (Yr11, HH), have reached the latter stages of the prestigious 2012 BBC Young Musician Competition. This world-famous biennial event has launched the careers of many well-known musicians at a young age such as Stephen Hough, Jennifer Pike and David Pyatt. Having both already passed through several extremely tough preliminary rounds, which included many instrumentalists from specialist music schools, Rosie reached the Strings Category Auditions round, with Julia progressing to join the four other string players now judged the best in the country for their age, in the televised Strings Category Final.

Julia Hwang

Julia will appear on BBC Four on Friday 27th April at 7.30pm, alongside two violinists and two cellists to compete for one of the final five places, with a programme of works by Lutoslawski, Suk and a virtuoso arrangement by Castelnuovo-Tedesco. A large group of supporters and her accompanist from Clifton make their way to newly-completed Dora Stoutzker Hall at Cardiff’s Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama to see her compete.

Congratulations go to all the pupils from Clifton who took part in this year’s competition.

The programme can be viewed also in iPlayer, with more details on the BBC Four website.
