House Handbook

East Town prides itself in having a warm, inviting and sociable atmosphere and attracts a wide range of boys who are able to represent the House well on the sports field, in Art, Drama and Music. The emphasis is on pupils reaching their potential academically and having a full extra co-curricular programme. East Town has 10 members of staff and three dogs, Poppy, Lucky and Lily looking after the boys and is open from 7.30am to 9.00pm.

History

Founded in 1957. The original site of the House was in the Hammond building (where the school shop is at present) but East Town moved into the front half of Dakyns in 28 College Road in 1985. Previous housemasters include John Kendall-Carpenter, Brian Wilson, Bob Bailey and Lionel Binns. TV presenters Chris Serle, Steve Scott and John Inverdale are some of our famous old boys.

House Strengths

East Town has had particular success in recently academically, musically in drama and on the sports field. Six of our boys have offers from Oxford or Cambridge this year – Jonny Whitaker, Chris Weale and Tommy Gill from Oxford and James Heaven, Charlie Moore and Freddie Kalfayan from Cambridge.

The Trenouth brothers Jonah and Dylan have continued to feature large in school concerts and both have given one man shows in the last twelve months. Dylan takes part in the next round of ‘Live and Unsigned’ in Reading during the Easter holidays and he has our best wishes for success. In the House Play festival Charlie Moore directed a stage version of the cult ‘Flight of the Conchords’ and won the Best Director award as well as best choreography and Best Achievement award. East Town won the Senior House Hockey tournament (helped by having eight of the first XI in the House) and also the Junior Football tournament in the Lent term. We are currently holders of the Tennis, Junior Cricket, Rackets and Darts trophies. John Molesworth has been selected as first reserve for the Great Britain Athelings shooting team in their tour to Canada this summer and Ben McGeoch won the Public Schools Rackets Renny Cup at Queens in December and Henry Mullan was one of the winning pair to win the Under 16 Real Tennis national tournament in February.

House Activities

One of the main activities in the House is table tennis and links to the last tournament can be found below. The House runs a biennial Masterchef competition and we were very fortunate to have had the head chef of the Lido restaurant, ex East Town pupil Freddie Bird, to judge the finals last year. Summer sees the House Barbeques taking place in the garden and a weekend trip to Cornwall where there is a chance to go surfing, coasteering and water skiing in the Camel Estuary in Rock. Bowling and paintballing have been recent outings. The House is also well known for its contribution to the House Unison Singing Competition.

Supper with Hallward's House

East Town and Hallward's House enjoying Safari Supper

Saturday night in the Lent Term 2013 saw the East Town Third Form boys entertain the girls of Hallward’s House with the first ever Safari supper.

This is a fun evening where Third Formers from one House either play host or are entertained by another House to one course of a three course meal – swopping Houses for each course.

It is a great way to mix and make new friends, and it certainly looks as if they are enjoying themselves.

Watch a clip of the East Town House Table Tennis 2010 Final between Tom ‘the Topspin’ Atkinson and Freddie ‘the forehand’ Kalfayan. Final scores are 11–7; 11–8; 9–11 and 11–8.
