Clifton College WebsiteEast TownEast Town prides itself in having a warm, inviting and sociable atmosphere and attracts a wide range of boys who are able to represent the House well on the sports field, in Art, Drama and Music. The emphasis is on pupils reaching their potential academically and having a full extra co-curricular programme. East Town has 10 members of staff and Poppy (see below) looking after the boys and is open from 7.30am to 9.00pm. HistoryFounded in 1957. The original site of the House was in the Hammond building (where the school shop is at present) but East Town moved into the front half of Dakyns in 28 College Road in 1985. Previous housemasters include John Kendall-Carpenter, Brian Wilson, Bob Bailey and Lionel Binns. TV presenters Chris Serle, Steve Scott and John Inverdale are some of our famous old boys. House StrengthsEast Town has had particular success recently in Drama with an outstanding production of Lord of the Flies directed by Joe Gibbs and Rhodri Lewis. In 2008 East Town has won the sailing, golf, tennis, and junior hockey, swimming and art competitions. Alasdair Jardine has won 1st prize in the American Film Institute Short Film Competition. In cricket Charlie Walker has won the Les Hodge Cup for the most promising U21 player in the Bristol and District league. He has captained the Somerset team for the last 5 years and won the Best Wisden Cricketer of the month in August. Freddie Kalfayan plays tennis for the U18 County Squad. He has also won the County Round of the Nestle Tennis Tournament with Will Evans and James Kenny and they are through to the South Finals. He also partners Andre Vakilzadeh in the school First Team. Tom Atkinson plays for the Under 16’s West Team. Joe Gibbs has had acting parts in Causality, Lewis and Mistresses. House ActivitiesOne of the main activities in the House is snooker on a full sized Billiard table in the House Hall. Summer sees the House Barbeques taking place in the garden and a weekend trip to Cornwall where there is a chance to go surfing and water skiing in the Camel Estuary in Rock. Bowling and paintballing have been recent outings. The House is also well known for its contribution to the House Unison Singing Competition.
