Clifton College WebsiteEast Town Michaelmas 2010 NewsletterDear Parents, ![]() This term seems to have hurtled by at break neck speed and East Town has enjoyed much success along the way. Our tradition of being the worst singers in the House Unison competition, just before half term, came to an end with our rendition of ‘You’ve got a friend in me’ from Toy Story. The nice noise that we produced came about mainly from stopping many of the Upper Sixth Form from singing – and one notable Fourth Former – and they just mimed instead. The Part Song on the other hand has for a long time been a beacon of musicality and this year was no exception and Jonah Trenouth (who also conducted the House Song) put together a super version of Ain’t no sunshine any more’ with his brother Dylan, Jasper Couper, Lucas Mesquite and William Slatton. This term has seen some great music in the Acoustic Band and Soul Band nights from the Trenouths, Roscoe Crawley and the Giebus brothers. Jonah has also just been awarded a Music Scholarship in recognition of his outstanding contribution to Clifton music. The term’s real highlight has been the new Table Tennis table. Computer games are now a thing of the past and the Sixth Form, in particular, have been playing every waking moment this term The first final of the East Town Table tennis competition took place just before the House Supper between Tom Atkinson, who played a cunningly defensive game, forcing errors from the acknowledged Table tennis prodigy of Freddy Kalfayan. In spite of winning one game, Freddie went on to beat Tom 2-1 in a thrillingly exciting game. Water Polo has not been a sport that we have excelled in over the years but under the captaincy of George Hood and with the help of Tom Atkinson, Chris Fleury, Charlie Moore, Henry Barnes and Jonah Trenouth, we reached the final. We did very well in the House swimming competition and we would have won the competition if Sam Ghaidan’s trunks had not fallen down when he dived in and we ended up one point behind the winners. The juniors came very close behind the winners. ![]() The best third form grades prize was won by William Slatton, the fourth form grades prize was won by Jake Probert and the fifth form prize was won by Freddie Eldridge who has had a busy term academically and in Les Miserables. The best third former prize went to William Slatton and the most improved third former prize went to Joel Barber. The East Town Cup was awarded this term to Chris Weale for his excellent organisation of the senior and junior debating competitions and all round contribution in the House. ![]() House Rugby was cancelled due to the weather but we had many boys representing the school (5 in the 1st XV) and captains in a number of teams. Henry Barnes was presented with the Nick Lloyd Cup for Most Outstanding Player of the Year. In Art, George Hood compiled a great exhibition of his and East Town’s work, with James Heaven, Toby Pyrke, John Molesworth and Johnny Gill being particularly noteworthy. Johnny Gill won a prize for his exceptional drawing of his parents. James Kenny has been a fantastic Head of House and we wish him and all the other Upper Sixth formers all the best with their university offers. Next term’s Head of House will be Henry Barnes. My thanks go to all the tutors and especially to Lindsay Telling, who has done so much for the House this term. ![]() I hope you all have a very Happy Christmas and New Year, Jonathan Thomson-Glover © 2006-12 Clifton College | Upper School NewsFamily fun at the UK's largest free nature festival Hockey success for Lily Owsley Schools' German Poetry Competition | ||||||
