Hallward's House

The Lent term is always the busiest and the shortest and I find it amazing how much can be packed into three months and still find everyone smiling and enjoying life at Clifton. There have been fantastic successes on the sports front with three of our girls enjoying their status as National Hockey winners – well done to Rachel Overton, Ella Browne and Evie Spicer. Julia Hwang has brought success to our House by being the runner-up in the BBC Young Musician of the Year 2012 strings final in Cardiff. Emily Gould has won the coveted Bluefin Dance Award 2012 against strong opposition in the Redgrave Theatre.

The Hallward’s girls always take opportunities and this term has been no exception and out of 53 Clifton College candidates taking LAMDA exams this term in Speaking in Public and Acting; 12 have been from Hallward’s House. The girls understand that this qualification (particularly when taken to Gold and PCert LAM level) is something that universities appreciate and it shows that they are able to juggle and cope with busy workloads.

As we head towards the holidays, there have been many achievements; not least, our own Julia Hwang achieving runner up status in the BBC Young Musician of the Year Competition 2012 (Strings section). We are very proud of her and particularly as she was told that she was the best violin player in the country at her age.

The girls are ready for the challenge of their GCSEs and A levels and have worked hard; the Easter holiday will give them time to recharge and revise ready for the onslaught of these public exams.

The girls enjoy regular opportunities for trips – Hampton Court, Warwick Castle, Longleat Safari Park and Cadbury to name but a few since we have opened. This year, we are off on a Magical Mystery Tour around Bristol – not even the girls are aware of where we are going nor are they aware yet of what we are doing! We all enjoy the shopping trips, theatre visits and going to the restaurants in and around Clifton Village.

Hallward's House Magazine is the house magazine which is published by the girls each year, and this recounts in photos and words their memories of the year. Please do let us know if you would like a copy sent to you (while stocks last).

There is a strong House Council which is run by the Head of House and Deputy Head of House each term and has representatives of each year group (elected by the girls) on the committee. This is a very successful and useful vocal platform for the girls to put forward their ideas.

Parents are invited several times during the year to a variety of events and are most welcome at Chapel on Starred Sundays throughout the year. There are coffee mornings, drinks parties and a Hog Roast in the summer term to enjoy and a chance to meet up with other parents of day and boarding Hallwardians.

History

Hallward’s was founded in September 2004 and was named after Bertrand Hallward, who was Headmaster of Clifton College from 1939 to 1948. He believed strongly in co-education and went on to be Vice Chancellor of Nottingham University. The building was formerly occupied by the boys of Watsons House and it was fully refurbished in 2004 before becoming a day and boarding house for girls.

House Strengths

We have so many differing strengths here at Hallward’s from academia to sport and from music and dance to drama and art. We encourage the girls to involve themselves in a wide variety of co-curricular activities and opportunities to bring a breadth to their life’s education and a wider interest to their curriculum vitaes.

House Activities

We are always busy working out an interesting trip or visit for the girls to enjoy and they play their part in the arrangements which are often discussed at the House Council Meetings.

Day girls and boarders have equal opportunities and the girls enjoy barbecues, film nights and a range of other entertainment. Day girls are welcome to stay overnight (subject to availability of a bed) and boarders often enjoy the weekends staying with their friends and their families locally. This brings them together and enriches their lives, and of course that of their families too.

In Christmas 2011 the girls sent nearly 60 shoeboxes of gifts to children in Africa as part of their WAA (Wednesday Afternoon Activity). Read the full story in News.

Hallward’s House celebrating the big day

Hallward’s House celebrated the Royal Wedding in style by all joining together in the House Hall to watch the arrival of the bride at Westminster Abbey. It was thrilling to see the familiar faces of Dr and Mrs Robert Acheson in the Abbey, waiting excitedly for the royal couple to appear. The girls had a wonderful few hours following the events of the day and singing to the hymns.

We then enjoyed an “off-road” street party in the driveway of the House, after decorating the outside buildings with bunting and flags, to celebrate the wedding with a barbeque, dancing and music through the evening.

A great time was had by all and it will be remembered as a happy and fun occasion.
