Clifton College WebsiteMoberly's HouseA school such as Clifton can seem very large and daunting but the House structure provides an environment where everyone has a niche, a role to play and is seen as being an individual within our smaller community. It is this, plus the desire to give and support that community in whatever way you can, that is Moberly's House ethos.
HistoryFormed in 1993 as an amalgamation of Brown's and Dakyn's Houses, residing in the old Brown’s House building. The House was named after Mr William Moberly who was a resident tutor in Brown’s before becoming the Housemaster of Dakyn’s. The House still retains some old photographs and memorabilia pertinent to both old Houses. The House has undergone a significant refurbishment in 2004 and all studies and communal areas have been extensively redecorated and refurbished with each pupil having individual access to the internet from their desks. The youngest pupils live in newly constructed mezzanine studies, the Fourth Formers and some of the Fifth Formers live in shared rooms, with a maximum of four per room, while the remainder of the Fifth Form and all the Sixth Form have single rooms. The refurbishment has sought to combine the best of the old with the requirements of modern boarding. House StrengthsThe pupils themselves would perceive Moberly's as a House strong at sport with a number of pupils playing representative sport. In this context however it has been great to see the more talented sportsman support the less talented in all sorts of activities and also see characters participate in House activities as they feel part of the community and want to contribute. An hour spent by a visitor in The House Hall around the pool table or the Table Football would lead reveal exactly what we mean by The House Community. There is a very strong feeling of Community and loyalty in the House which is fostered by the older pupils and readily accepted by the junior boys. House ActivitiesThese tend to revolve around daily table football and pool sessions. In addition, we sometimes go paintballing and after prep in the evenings, play a range of sports, such as soccer, water polo, swimming, fives, badminton or squash depending on the time of year. Recently, a large number of the boys have become more interested in music and this is an increasing influence. Pupil AchievementsLast year’s Upper were very strong academically with a large number obtaining straight A grades at A2 Level and 5 obtaining places to study at Oxford or Cambridge. In music, there is considerable strength in contemporary music with pupils from the house being the leading players in the annual 'Battle of the Bands' competition. Ethan Matthews and Daniel Crandon both represented Wales at Under-16 level rugby last year. House MottoStet fortuna domus — 'May fortune attend those who dwell here' ContactMoberly's House
