Clifton College WebsiteOakeley's HouseI am now in my 4th year as Housemistress, I have been a teacher here at Clifton for 10 years and prior to that both myself and my husband are Old Cliftonian’s. The welfare of the girls is of the utmost importance and it is also essential that the girls feel supported in all that they do. As more than half of the House are full boarders it is vital that the girls live in an environment that feels as close to home as possible, therefore, I am very proud of the warm and friendly atmosphere of Oakeley’s. We have managed to balance this with an outstanding work ethic in the House and the Oakeley’s girls regularly receive awards for their academic achievements. The team spirit and total involvement in all activities across the school are testament to the characteristic of most of the girls.
HistoryThe doors of Oakeley's House first opened in 1870 under the watchful eye of E. Harris. It takes its name from the second Housemaster, EM Oakeley who took over in 1877. One hundred and ten years later in September 1987, it was transformed into the first girls' house under the care of Fiona Hallworth. Famous Old Girls/Boys include Harry Plunkett-Green (pianist and bass baritone) and Martina Topley-Bird (singer). House StrengthsOakeley’s girls are multitalented and in our leaving U6th year group we have one girl off to Cambridge to read Philosophy, another to attend the London College of Fashion and many more headed off to University to read Architecture, Accounting and Civil Engineering to mention a few. One of our U6th girls has just returned from America. Earlier on in the year she beat 90 other applicants to be awarded the sponsorship to the 2010 Rotary Youth World Affairs Seminar in America (Summer 2010). ![]() In 2011 Rosalind Dunn came 3rd in the Foil County Championships, 1st in the Epee County Championships and 1st in the Sabre County Championships. She also managed to come 3rd in the Regional Foil Qualifiers which meant she progressed to the British Youth Championships where she came 31st in the country for her age category (U16 girls). Rosalind went to the Public Schools fencing Championships where she placed 27th in the girls Junior Epee and 25th in the girls Junior Foil. Her hope next year is to continue with her training and start going to the Cadet Opens where you can get points to go towards being picked for the England Squad. House ActivitiesWe offer cinema trips, bowling, laser quest and theatre trips to name but a few. We have an all-weather table tennis table, a snooker table and table football. Every boarder has a birthday celebration with her peers and we have regular barbecues and celebrations after major events and competitions. The highlight of the year is the House Supper, where everyone gets a chance to dress up in their finery.
