Clifton College WebsiteThe South TownThe House has a very friendly atmosphere, lifting everyone involved with the House and pushing them to perform to their very best in all areas of school life.
HistoryThe South Town was founded as a day house in 1874. In a sporting competition with North Town, which originally shared the building that is now The South Town, ‘South Town’ earned the right to prefix its name with the preposition ‘The’, which has remained ever since. The Town retains a great sense of history, having been located in its original building since its foundation, and this tradition is represented in the team spirit of the members house today. House SpiritThe house’s motto Vis Unita Fortior is a fitting message for a house at Clifton. Generations of South Town boys have learned through experience that Together we are stronger. Regular house activities seek to enhance this message. Five-a-side football, climbing trips, tutor-group outings and house supper help to teach skills of teamwork and help to build life-long friendships. Recent House AchievementsSuch a message is embodied in the wide ranging contributions the house makes to house competitions. Dramatically, the House has a strong history of performing well in Inter House competitions. 2007 saw a strong cast and backstage team winning the House Drama competition with an outstanding performance of Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman. It was proclaimed by the judges to be the best house production in living memory at Clifton. The house also won 'Best Overall Drama' for 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest' in 2008. Musically, both the 2004 and 2005 part singing competitions were won by South Town, with victory in 2004 in the house instrumental competition as well. The Senior Debating team (Tim Kovoor, Andrew Bailey and Rob Figueredo) were runners up in the 2006/2007 competition, and the junior team showed much promise. On the sporting front, The South Town have challenged strongly in all of the wide range of disciplines in which houses compete. Nick Davidson (2007) holds the record for the fastest completion of The Pens, the whole-school cross country race in the entire history of the school. School AchievementsThe South Town’s pupils are traditionally some of the strongest leaders in school life. This term Owen Franklin is the deputy head of school while John Butterworth is the Praeposter. ContactSouth Town
