The Sixth Former's Café (JCR): A Sixth Former's Review

The new JCR

The end of last year brought the end of the sixth form's JCR as we knew it. With licensing laws stopping the consumption of alcohol without a plated meal, the JCR committee tried without success to regularly attract a good portion of the sixth form to the JCR in the evenings.

However, the new term brought new plans for the JCR and the committee decided it would benefit all involved to turn what was a failing attempt at a club into the thriving café that it is today.

The new JCR

Pioneered by Amy Bracey, the committee set out and began to change the aim of the JCR, which is now to provide a day-time café for the sixth form, serving lunch, break and tea, and providing a place to socialise and relax.

The whole appearance of the JCR has changed as well: with a repaint it is much brighter and looking far more spacious than the previously black walls allowed, and with more sofas and coffee tables and chairs, the space is much more efficiently used; and the plants, paintings and notice boards only add to the cosy atmosphere.

With this effort having been made by the committee, much credit must go to Debbie, the new full-time steward of the JCR, who has transformed the kitchen into something which is now frequently used and provides brilliant paninis at lunch times!!

The sixth form have loved these renovations, and the feedback could not have been more positive. It is frequently visited and used at lunch times, break times, and whenever we can get in there, which is a huge contrast to last term when it was ignored and rarely opened, due to a lack of visitors!

A place for the 6th Form to meet socially

From the sixth form, thank you very much to all of those involved in these improvements, they have been gratefully received and give the JCR a future which it seemed to lack until this term.
