Clifton College WebsiteFootball![]() Member of staff in charge of football: Mr David Rodgers Football is one of the games choices for all boys in the Upper School from 13-18 years of age and is played in the Lent Term. Eight teams regularly take to the field on a Saturday and matches are also played in midweek on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. Traditional fixtures against schools such as Sherborne, Blundell’s and both Worcester Schools, King's and RGS, have recently been supplemented by the addition of League Fixtures. In 2006 a group of schools who regularly played games against each other decided to try and form a League to add a more competitive element to their fixtures. Consequently, the Mercian School's Independent League was formed and in the Lent Term 2007, a Southern and Midlands Section started up with the winner of each League playing a final at the end of term, under floodlights at Ludlow Town FC. Despite having an average first season, in the following year of 2008, Clifton won their section before going on to beat RGS Worcester in the final, 3 goals to 1. Although football is played in the annually very short term, with numerous cancellations because of adverse weather conditions, the boys enjoy their football immensely and are encouraged to play a fast flowing, passing game under the watchful eye of their Master i/c, David Rodgers. Mr Rodgers played professional football for Bristol City FC for 14 years before short spells at Torquay Utd and Lincoln City. He has been at the College since 1985. The school has embarked on two Tours in the past six years, both crossing the Atlantic, firstly to Florida in 2003 and then to California in 2006. Both tours were memorable in the fact that the boys, mostly aged 12-17 years, were able to experience a different level of skill, fitness and interpretation of how the game is played in the USA, and combined with the many tourist attractions which balanced the trips to perfection. All fixtures for the current season can be found under Sports. ![]() © 2006-12 Clifton College | Upper School NewsClifton trumps the weather!
